If you have recently noticed mould growing in your unit, it is essential to act quickly and effectively to prevent a moisture build-up. Monitoring your unit's moisture level and managing mould issues immediately will prevent property damage while keeping your residents happy and healthy.
To assist with this, we've put together some helpful tips below about mould and the options you have for preventing future mould in your unit property.
- Encourage your residents to keep humidity levels as low as possible- no higher than 50%- all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help keep the level low.
- Be sure that your unit has enough ventilation. Encourage residents to use exhaust fans that vent outside the unit in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Fix any leaks in your unit property's roof, walls, or plumbing so mould does not have moisture to grow.
- Clean up and dry out your unit thoroughly and quickly (within 24-28 hours) after flooding.
- Add mould inhibitors to paints before painting.
- Encourage residents to clean bathrooms with mould-killing products.
- Clean, remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.
- Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
